11/30 Pac-12 Championships

Head coach Chris Peterson hands a rose to senior tackle Kaleb McGary after beating Utah 10-3 and guaranteeing a Rose Bowl berth.

With a 10-3 win in the Pac-12 championship game, the No. 11 Washington football team has punched its ticket to Rose Bowl. It’s the first time the Huskies will play in the Granddaddy of Them All since 2001. A lot has changed since then.

The last time Washington went to the Rose Bowl:

  • Gas cost $1.46.

  • “Flossing” was something you did to your teeth.

  • Amazon had yet to turn in a profit in the fourth quarter.

  • Chris Petersen was nine days away from being hired at Boise State.

  • The SuperSonics still had seven seasons left in Seattle.

  • The most famous Cyrus was Billy Ray.

  • The Rams were the defending Super Bowl champions. The St. Louis Rams, that is.
  • The coolest kids on campus were walking around with Nokia cell phones.

  • Texas Tech had just gone 7-5 under first-year head coach Mike Leach.

  • There were just 10 months until the Mariners’ playoff drought began.

  • Alabama had just gone 3-8.

  • I was two years old.
