The Washington men's tennis team swept the Great Northwest Shootout at the Nordstrom Tennis Center over the weekend.
The event featured three wins for the No. 18 Huskies (7-0).
After losing the doubles point in yesterday's match against No. 17 Tulane, the Huskies rallied in singles play to come out with a 4-3 victory.
For the second consecutive day, it was senior Christoph Palmanshofer who won the clinching match for the UW 6-3, 7-6. Also winning yesterday was No. 9 Alex Slovic in his first singles match of the season.
Senior Peter Scharler had the easiest singles victory of the day, sweeping Ted Angelinos 6-0, 6-1.
On Saturday, Palmanshofer gave a big performance for Washington against No. 11 Ohio State (2-2) as he won the clinching match that led to a 4-1 Husky victory.
"I was just trying to stay out there as long as I could and hopefully secure the win for us," Palmanshofer said. "I didn't make too many mistakes on the court; it's great to get a really good victory for us. It's good for our confidence and good for our team spirit."
After sweeping doubles play, the UW came out in singles looking for the easy victory; however, the Buckeyes did not go down easy. Sophomore Chris Floyd lost his first match of the season, falling 6-4, 6-2 to Ross Wilson. Alex Vlaski came out with a big win over No. 124 Chris Klingemann.
With the Huskies up 3-1 but trailing in the other two matches, Palmanshofer clinched the match, beating No. 40 David Mullings 7-6, 6-2.
"It was a heck of an effort, and it was needed," UW coach Matt Anger said. "They are a very scrappy team, and they make you work for every point, and fortunately we were up to the task today."
The weekend began with a 4-0 sweep of No. 43 Minnesota (1-2) Friday night.
Washington dominated doubles action in its 2-0 win highlighted by Scharler and sophomore Daniel Chu's 8-1 victory over Raul Schwark and Nic Edlefsen. Doubles was a sore spot a week ago, but the Huskies stepped it up in two of the three matches this weekend.
"We came out and played really well -- the way we've been trying to in practice," Anger said about doubles. "It was nice to be able to do it in a match."
Chu and Scharler both had good nights in the singles lineup as well, as both players swept their matches. However, it was Mike Ricks' 6-4, 6-2 victory over Sion Wilkins that stood out the most. It was his first singles match of the season.
"I hung in there pretty well, sunk my teeth into a few games that I needed to," Ricks said. "I just need to get a little more comfortable, but once I got going, I hung in there well."
Washington returns to action Saturday against Pepperdine in Seattle.
