The Washington men's tennis team started its season without sophomore Alex Slovic by serving up a pair of victories against Portland and San Francisco last weekend at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
"We're happy to get the match under our belt and move forward," coach Matt Anger said. "There were some good things out there, and we still have some things to get better at, like everyone, but overall it was a fun weekend."
Slovic, ranked No. 9, was out with a nagging rib-injury and will remain day-to-day.
Last Saturday, the No. 21 Huskies swept the Dons 7-0. They did not lose a single set in the entire match.
The UW swept the doubles point, highlighted by a comeback by freshman Andy Kuharszky and sophomore Mike Rick in No.3 doubles. Trailing 5-7 to Rafael Corazza and Falko Huettenberger, the duo came back to force a tiebreak, which they won 7-4 to take the match.
In singles play, the Huskies overmatched their opponents, taking all six singles points. All-American senior Alex Vlaski defeated Timo Kienle in No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-3.
Sophomore Daniel Chu responded to a tough loss last Friday by sweeping Andrew Hogan, 6-2, 6-0.
"After yesterday, I was happy that Daniel Chu came right back today and got a good doubles win," Anger said. "That's an important thing where in a tournament it's win or you're done, in college tennis you play one day and the next day."
Last Friday Kuharszky earned his first victory in a Washington uniform as the UW beat Portland 6-1.
Kuharszky won 6-1, 6-4, over the Pilot's Alex Strom at No. 4 singles. He also won in double s with Ricks over Strom and Colby Jager, 8-2.
"I played pretty well in the first set, but I struggled a little in the second," Kuharszky said. "It's a really good feeling, and I feel like a real Husky now."
Chu was the only Husky player who struggled on the night as he lost his doubles match with senior partner Peter Scharler 8-1 to Roman Borvanov and Scott Kennel. Chu also fell to Borvanov in singles, losing 6-2, 5-7, 7-5.
Washington returns to action this weekend with home matches against New Mexico Friday and Michigan State Jan. 30
