Records broken in Husky win

It was a night of records yesterday as the top-ranked Washington volleyball team came out with its victory over Arizona to remain undefeated in the season. The Huskies (21-0 overall, 13-0 Pac-10) tied two records last night as a team, and junior libero Candace Lee broke one individually as the UW swept the No. 21 Wildcats (15-9, 7-7) three games to none. Last night's win marked the 21st-straight victory to start the season, which ties the team for the best start in UW history. The other team to reach that mark was the 1977 squad, which finished the season 28-2. It was also the 13th conference victory for Washington, a mark reached only twice before in school history -- in 1989 and 1997. Lee came into the game only needing 14 digs to break the record for most digs in a career at the UW. She finished the night with 16 to break the record previously held by Lisa McCammond. "I am so excited for her," junior Brie Hagerty said. "Going against her every day in practice, I can't imagine the opponents hitting against her." As for the game, Washington swept its opponent at home for the sixth time this season in as many tries. In game one, the Huskies started off strong to take a 5-1 lead and never looked back, winning 30-20. Good defense and a loud crowd propelled the team as it held the Wildcats to a .073 hitting percentage. Game two was much more of a dogfight than the previous one. Washington started out strong again, taking a 3-0 lead, but Arizona fought back to put the lead in its favor at 9-8. The game went back-and-forth from there until a 5-0 Wildcat run put them back up at 25-23. However, an emphatic kill by junior Jessica Veris sparked an 8-2 Washington run to give the UW a 30-27 victory. After the break, Arizona and Washington looked evenly matched in game three with the only difference being a 3-0 run by the Huskies to put them up 13-9. From there, the teams traded points for the rest of the game until the Huskies came out on top 30-23. "I thought we were pretty good collectively," said coach Jim McLaughlin. "We took care of the ball, passed well and we were in rhythm a lot, and any time we are in rhythm we put a lot of pressure on the opponent." Leck led the team with 16 in the match, and freshman Christal Morrison put down 14 on a .522 hitting percentage. "I tried to mentally focus before and during the game," said Morrison, who also finished with nine digs. "I tried to get rid of all my unforced errors." The Huskies return to action today against Arizona State at 7 p.m. The Sun Devils are led by Nicole Martin on offense with 3.61 kills per game this season.
