Huskies fall flat in Portland, give up eight runs in two innings

Every team has days when things don’t go right. For the Washington baseball team, Tuesday was just one of those days. Riding a hot streak into a four-game road trip, the Huskies allowed eight runs over the first two innings on their way to a 9-3 loss to host Portland on Tuesday afternoon. Entering the game, the UW (19-31, 10-14 Pac-12) had won 10 of its past 15 games, including the final two of its series with Utah over the weekend. But that momentum was slowed down by four-run outbursts in each of the first two innings that put the Pilots in complete control of the game. Mak ing his first career start for the UW, Dae Yang Kim struggled, allowing four earned runs in just one inning of work. He struggled with his command, walking the first two batters of the game before allowing a two-run double to Ben Grubb. Grubb came home on a single from Caleb Whalen, who scored on another single from Zack McCoy. In the following inning, the Pilots doubled their lead to put the game out of reach. With two men on, Kramer Scott ripped a triple off Alex Nesbitt to score two, then jogged home on a triple from Grubb. He scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 8-0. The Huskies got on the board in the third inning with one run. Ty Afenir led off the inning with a walk, and he eventually came around to score on a Robert Pehl single. But the Pilots were back at it in the sixth inning, adding their final run. Nick Armenta singled home Bo Cornish to push the Pilot lead back to eight. Making his collegiate debut for the UW out of the bullpen, freshman Matt Lunde was solid, tossing 3 two-third innings of one-run ball. The left-hander from Skyline High School retired the first nine batters he faced before allowing a hit on two runs in the sixth. The UW’s offense did cut into the lead in the eighth, as Andrew Ely scored on a double from Pehl. He came around on a groundout from Brian Wolfe to make it 9-3. Up next for the Huskies is a series with their rivals from Pullman, Wash. The Cougars are 21-27, but just 8-16 in conference play, which puts them in 10th in the standings. The series begins with a 6 p.m. first pitch Friday, followed by two matinees over the weekend. Reach reporter Daniel Rubens at sports@dailyuw.com. Twitter: @drubens12
