5: The UW had a +5 turnover differential last season
In defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox’s first season managing the Washington defense, the Huskies forced 33 turnovers, 10 more than they had in 2011. Helping this were big seasons from defensive end Josh Shirley (six forced fumbles), linebacker Shaq Thompson (three interceptions and a fumble recovery), and cornerback Marcus Peters (three interceptions and a fumble recovery). The strong defense was vital in winning close, low-scoring games against Stanford and Oregon State.
The Huskies have to replace starters Justin Glenn and Desmond Trufant, who were responsible for a combined five takeaways. On the depth chart released by the team Saturday, the listed replacements were Will Shamburger at safety and Greg Ducre at cornerback, who combined for just two takeaways last season. If their numbers improve as they should with more playing time, the Huskies opportunistic defense could continue to soar in 2013.
