The Washington women's golf team made a rapid ascent up the leaderboard yesterday at the Las Vegas Founders Collegiate Showdown in Henderson, Nev.
After falling to a disappointing fourth place Tuesday, the No. 3 Huskies picked up the pace in the final round, finishing five strokes off tournament winner and host UNLV. It is the third time in four tournaments this fall the Huskies have placed second.
Washington carded a tournament-low round of 8-under 280 to vault it up to second. The UW finished at 16-over 880 at the end of the three-day event. The Rebels won the showdown at 11-over 875.
Led by junior Sung Ea Lee, the Huskies had three players end the day with scores under par. Lee shot a 4-under 68 yesterday to put her at even par on the tournament and end in a tie with San Francisco's Jessica Potter for second place.
Lee missed taking the top spot by just one stroke, as UNLV's Hwanhee Lee shot 1-under 215 for the tournament.
Freshman Kim Shin carded a 2-under 70 yesterday to finish in ninth place at 4-over 220. Junior Paige Mackenzie and sophomore Ashley Bickerton both finished the day at one-under 71. Mackenzie finished in 24th at 9-over 225. Bickerton tied fellow sophomore Amy Wang for 35th at 12-over 228.
Washington returns to competition Nov. 14 at the National Collegiate Match Play in Orlando.
