Freshman Jack Davis returns a cross court shot in UW's win over Pepperdine.
The Washington men's tennis team swept Pepperdine 7-0 to move to 3-1 on the season.
The Huskies got out to a quick start, winning both doubles matches and leading in the third when it was called.
Junior Mitch Foley and senior Mitch Stewart dominated their doubles match, winning 6-0. Both Foley and Stewart then faced one of their doubles opponent's in singles. Foley won 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. Stewart was victorious 7-6, 6-2.
Stewart was able to play the type of game that he likes and felt like he wore down his opponent as the match went on.
“I think I just got into his legs, I was making a bunch of balls and making him run a lot,” Stewart said. “That’s how I like to play. I call it ‘track meet tennis’ and I think I kinda just broke him down and that's why you saw a little break down at the end. He’s a really good player and he pushed me to the limit as well.”
Head coach Matt Anger liked the aggressiveness that the team showed out the gate and sustained.
“The doubles performance was good to see,” Anger said. “We were able to get off to a good head start and finish it off. In singles, I think for the most part we started strong. All of the matches were closer than the team score shows. We don’t just want to come out strong, we want to sustain it and finish. And we did that today.”
Freshman Jack Davis and sophomore Amit Batta won within seconds of each other to give Washington a big boost early. Both won in straight sets, Davis 6-3, 6-2 and Batta 6-4, 6-2.
Those victories were followed up by a tough 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 win by junior Enzo Sommer.
The match was closed out by senior captain Jake Douglas. He lost a heartbreaking first set tiebreak, but followed that up with a 6-3 second set win. He finished the match with a thrilling 7-5 win in the third set to beat No. 100 Dennis Uspensky.
Washington is back at it tomorrow at 3 p.m. against the Princeton Tigers.
