Huskies vanquish Vanguard, 83-34

The Washington women's basketball team closed out the exhibition season with NAIA opponent Vanguard University, 83-34 last night at Hec Edmondson Pavilion. Husky coach June Daugherty was pleased with the team's performance on both sides of the court. "I thought our intensity definitely stepped up on the defensive end," Daugherty said. "I think we were able to get into our running game early because of our new dedication to defense." Sophomore guard Cheri Craddock led the Huskies with 14 points on 5-11 shooting, including 4-6 from beyond the arc. "I've been working on my shot a lot," she said of her shooting success. "I just go with the flow of the game, and if I'm open I take the shot." Craddock opened the game with a quick three, the first of four she hit in the half. The Lions responded on the very next possession, hitting a three of their own to tie the score at 3-3. That was the closest the score would be for the rest of the night, as the Huskies came out and hit two threes in a row to run the score to 9-2, in what would be the final lead change of the night. After Vanguard hit two foul shots, the UW went on a 23-6 run that included threes by junior Kayla Burt and Craddock and put the score at 32-11. A fast break bucket by sophomore Breanne Watson ended the scoring in the first half as the two teams went into the locker room with the score sitting at 40-16. "It was good that we were hot early from three," Daugherty said of her team's early shooting success. The Huskies came out in the second half relying less from behind the arc and more on fast breaks. With the score 54-25 early in the second half, freshman guard Dominique Banks scored nine straight points, including the UW's only three of the second half as the Huskies went on a 13-0 run. Banks led the team in rebounding and finished with 11 points on the night. Sophomore Breanne Watson was second on the team, adding 12 points. But it was Vanguard's Kelly Schmidt who led all scorers on the night with 17 points, 13 of which came on free throws. While she was impressed, Daugherty still found room for improvement. "I think we should have done a little bit more post offense early," she said. "We should have tested the waters inside to see if we had something easy and if we did not then just kick it out." Washington now begins the regular season Nov. 14 in Seattle against South Carolina in the WBCA BTI Classic.
