Senior midfielder James Moberg celebrates after scoring a penalty kick goal in the UW's 3-0 victory over UC Davis on Sunday at Husky Soccer Stadium.

Huskies earn clean sheet in victory over UC Davis

In its second home game of the weekend, the Washington men’s soccer team ended with a victory and a clean sheet for the second time in three days. Keeping the pressure up front and controlling the ball worked in the Huskies favor Sunday night as they defeated UC Davis 3-0 at Husky Soccer Stadium. After an exhibition game last week in Nebraska and Friday’s matchup against Gonzaga, the Huskies seem to be starting to settle into their new roles. “It was the most controlled we’ve been,” head coach Jamie Clark said. “ … Today we settled to tempo, we worked really hard, but we just settled and got the ball.” The Huskies dominated the game early on, and ended the night with 16 shots to the Aggies’ eight. Starting the scoring early with a penalty kick in the 16th minute from senior midfielder James Moberg, the Huskies went to the half ahead 1-0. “Playing those types of games, Sunday games, it’s always hard to score,” Moberg said. “So putting the first one in gave us a little bit of relaxation and just heading into the second half up 1-0 is big for us.” After the break the Huskies came out firing, putting the Aggies away with two quick goals. In the 49th minute, senior forward Josh Heard dribbled past the defense and found the back of the net to put the Huskies up 2-0. In the 54th minute, senior Michael Gallagher knocked in the final goal of the night, just the third of his career. From there it was all about the defense as the UW worked toward their second clean sheet of the weekend and what would end up being the 10th career shutout for redshirt senior goalkeeper Ryan Herman. However, Herman was quick to deflect the credit away from himself. “It’s a team effort,” Herman said. “Everybody’s working hard, I mean, obviously I didn’t have to do anything today. … But it comes from the top, like forwards pressuring and everything, so it’s a team effort and it’s not really my stat, it’s more of a team stat.” The UW used eight substitutions Sunday against the Aggies, and will continue to use a variety of lineups during nonconference play. “A lot of guys played and played well tonight,” Clark said. “So we got to keep that big number of guys playing well.” One player who hasn’t seen the field for the Huskies this season is junior forward Mason Robertson, who sat out for the second straight game with a leg injury. Robertson netted seven goals a season ago, and is the team’s leading returning scorer along with Heard. Now at 2-0 for the season, the Huskies prepare for their first road trip of the year and a matchup with Pennsylvania on Sept. 4 at 4:30 p.m. PT.
