The Washington men's basketball team will hold open walk-on tryouts on Thursday at 6 p.m., as head coach Lorenzo Romar is apparently willing to take an extra player this season.
The Huskies haven't had a walk-on since Brandon Burmeister graduated following the 2006-2007 season, and Romar generally doesn't take anyone unless he can find somebody who can help the team in practice without demanding playing time in return.
That's hard to do sometimes.
"If there was someone that decided to walk on and help us out that was good enough to push our guys in practice, and be good enough mentally ... and not [be] coming into my office asking why isn't he starting - 'I'm doing everything, why aren't I playing more?' - then, yeah, we might consider remotely having someone," Romar said at UW's media day.Washington has only 12 players on its roster since junior college transfer Charles Garcia failed to meet the UW's academic transfer requirements. He's playing for Seattle University instead.
Zane Potter, Alex Johnson and Matt Fletcher are the only other walk-ons Romar has had in his eight-year career at Washington.
The tryouts are open to all full-time UW students with an updated physical exam from the past six months.
