The Washington men’s tennis team returned to the win column with a 6-1 victory over Pacific to move to 2-1 on the season.

The evening started with a back and forth ending to the doubles point. Piers Foley and Mitch Stewart handled business winning 6-2 while Jack Davis and Jake Douglas fell 6-3.

The intrigue was with Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer. The duo fell behind early 4-0 before storming back to take a 5-4 lead. Ultimately Pacific was able to finish it 7-5 to take the doubles point.

Sommer was able to shake off that loss in doubles to win his singles match 6-2, 6-1.

“No matter what happens in doubles, if we win or lose, we always have the same mentally to go after the singles and get the job done,” Sommer said. “That’s how we did it.”

The rest of the Huskies bounced back in their singles matches as well. They got off to a blazing start as Douglas swept his match 6-0, 6-0. He attacked early and kept the pressure on.

“I got a good start and the guy felt less and less confident and I was able to keep the pressure on,” Douglas said. “I just cut down on unforced errors and made him play a lot of balls. He's a good player, so I just kept the pressure on the whole time.”

The match was completed so quickly that Jack Davis was still in his first set when Douglas wrapped it up.

Speaking of Davis, he came back from down five games before rallying off seven consecutive to take the first set. He went on to take the second set 6-3 for the victory.

Head coach Matt Anger was happy with the result.

‘I am pleased that we got the win,” Anger said. “I like Pacific and their coach. I know they prepare well and they are getting better and better. I expected them to be tough, especially in doubles.”

He left the match with things to improve on going forward.

“I thought on a couple of courts we just didn’t come out to start with as sharp as we have,” Anger said. “A number of our guys did do that, Piers and Mitch did that in doubles and Jake and Mitch and Amit and Enzo did that in singles.”

Straight set wins by sophomore Amit Batta, 6-4, 6-2, and Stewart 6-1, 6-3 clinched the match for Washington.

The final win for the Dawgs was a thrilling comeback performance by junior Piers Foley 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.

Next up for Washington is a home match against UC Davis on Feb 9 at 5 p.m.
