Stanford stomps Huskies in series finale

For the second-straight weekend, the Washington baseball team had a chance to win a series on Sunday. And, for the second-straight weekend, it came up short. After splitting the first two games of the series, the Huskies lost Sunday’s finale to Stanford, falling 12-2. It was the UW’s third-consecutive series loss, and its eighth in nine weekend series this season. After losing Friday’s game, the Huskies (9-24, 3-9 Pac-12) responded with a resounding 11-3 win on Saturday, in which they collected 16 hits and got a fantastic outing from ace Austin Voth. However, they were unable to capitalize on the momentum and were thoroughly outmatched by Stanford in the final game of the weekend. In Friday’s series opener, the Huskies did some damage offensively, but lost to the Cardinal 7-5. Stanford ace Mark Appel, the eighth overall pick in last year’s MLB Draft, went eight innings to earn the win, though he surrendered four runs (three earned) on seven hits to the Huskies. A trio of UW seniors led the Huskies offensively Friday. Outfielder Jayce Ray went 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs, and Joe Meggs and Ty Afenir each adding two hits. On Saturday, the UW’s bats stayed hot, as they pounded out 16 hits and scored 11 runs behind Voth to snap a four-game skid. After hitting a pair of home runs in a loss to Cal State Northridge on Monday, senior outfielder Michael Camporeale started off Saturday’s game with a two-out, two-run double to put the Huskies ahead in the first. After Stanford tied it in the bottom of the inning on a home run, Andrew Ely and Robert Pehl each hit RBI singles in the second to give the UW a 4-2 lead. That was more than enough for Voth, who was excellent in winning his fourth game of the season. He tossed eight innings of five-hit ball, allowing just the two first inning runs and striking out nine. It was Voth’s second start in a row in which he threw eight innings and struck out at least nine. The Huskies added two more in the fourth and one in the seventh before Camporeale’s second two-run double essentially put the game out of reach at 9-2 in the eighth. A two-run single by Ray and a Stanford solo home run brought the final tally to 11-3 in favor of the UW. But Sunday was a near-reversal of the previous day, with UW pitchers allowing 15 hits and 12 runs in a series-ending slaughter. After scoring one on a two-out rally in the first, the Cardinal hammered UW starter Trevor Dunlap in the second, who was pulled after giving up back-to-back home runs. In all, the Cardinal added six in the second off Dunlap and reliever Zach Wright, and another two in the fourth. The score was 9-0 when the Huskies finally scratched their first run across in the fifth on a bases-loaded groundout from Braden Bishop. After Stanford picked up two more in the bottom of the fifth, Camporeale pulled the UW slightly closer with his third home run of the week and season. But another Stanford run in the eighth ensured that there would be no miraculous comeback for the UW on Sunday. The Huskies limp home after playing their past 11 games on the road for a mid-week matchup with Seattle University on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Husky Ballpark.
