UW hosts Great Northwest Shootout

The Washington men's tennis team takes to the courts this weekend to compete in the Great Northwest Shootout at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The No. 18 Huskies (4-0 overall) play three matches this weekend against ranked teams in a round-robin style tournament. All four teams will play each other, with the exception of No. 11 Ohio State and No. 43 Minnesota, who are in the same conference. Play begins today starting at noon when Ohio State (2-0) and No. 17 Tulane (4-0) face off, followed by the UW's first match of the weekend against Minnesota. Washington will play the Buckeyes tomorrow and finish the tournament Monday against the Green Wave. "We are going to see a lot of new faces," coach Matt Anger said about the players on the opposing teams. "We know that they're all capable, so it will be fun and exciting." As their first opponent this weekend, the Huskies will take on 105th-ranked senior Avery Ticer and the Golden Gophers. Minnesota finished the season last year as the third place team in the Big Ten. They are 0-1 this year, falling to No. 10 Virginia last weekend. "We have played Minnesota a number of times, but not for a few years, so we haven't played against any of the guys on their current team," Anger said. Ohio State finished 26-5 last season and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals. The Buckeyes also feature the No. 1 doubles pair in the nation, juniors Scott Green and Ross Wilson. Sophomore Devin Mullings is ranked No. 40 in singles play. Tulane comes to town ranked one spot higher in the polls than the Huskies, with an identical 4-0 record. The Green Wave has a pair of ranked players with Senior Dmitriy Koch coming in ranked 59th and No. 81 sophomore David Goulet. Tulane has won both match ups all-time against the UW. "Because we're pretty early in the season, you don't know where guys are going to be in the lineup," Anger said. "We just have to get our guys ready to play their best tennis." Washington participants this weekend should include No. 9 sophomore Alex Slovic, who has yet to play this season due to injury. "He has been day-to-day, and still is, but I would say that he will be making his debut this weekend," Anger said about the talented sophomore.
