In her first tournament this fall, sophomore Amy Wang led the Washington women's golf team to the top spot on the leaderboard after one day of play at the Las Vegas Founder's Women's Collegiate Showdown in Henderson, Nev.
Wang shot an even par 72 in the first round to put her in sole possession of third place.
"That was a great way for her to come out," said coach Mary Lou Mulflur of Wang's performance. "She did really well with the opportunity she got today."
The No. 3 Huskies shot a 6-over 294 to put them two strokes ahead of the second place team and tournament host UNLV.
"The conditions were pretty tough today; it was pretty cold and windy here," said Mulflur. "I thought the players handled [the weather] for the most part pretty well today, and overall we were pleased with the way that we played, but we know we can do better."
Three Husky players finished tied with 11 other participants for seventh place. Juniors Sung Ea Lee, Paige McKenzie and freshman Kim Shin all finished with a 2-over 74.
Megan Hull of Texas Tech and San Francisco's Jessica Potter are tied for first place at 1-under 71.
As play continues today, Mulflur said the Huskies have a good shot to improve and stay in first place.
"We need to keep being patient and play within ourselves," she said. "We just need to keep being patient and keep focusing on ourselves."
The tournament continues today with tee times starting at 8 a.m.
