Huskies face surging Stanford in Palo Alto

The Washington volleyball squad puts its season-long winning streak on the line against Stanford today at 7 p.m. in Palo Alto, Calif. The No.1 Huskies (22-0 overall, 14-0 Pac-10) have four games left in the regular season, all against ranked opponents. They head to the bay area this weekend to take on the No. 9 Cardinal (19-6, 11-3) today and then head to Berkeley to face No. 14 California tomorrow. The Huskies, along with No. 2 Hawaii, are the two remaining undefeated teams in Division I. The Warriors, who play in the WAC and are 23-0, received two first-place votes in the last USA Today/AVCA Top 25 poll. Washington received 62 first-place votes to remain in the top spot for the seventh straight week. The UW comes into the match after sweeping both Arizona and Arizona State 3-0 last week. The victories pushed the Huskies' winning streak to 22 -- the best in program history. The 1977 squad previously held the record after it started the season 21-0. The Cardinal is currently on a four-match winning streak, including a 3-0 sweep over No. 6 USC two weeks ago. In the all-time series, Stanford leads the Huskies 37-5, but Washington has won the last three matches including a 3-0 sweep at home earlier this year. Stanford will be sending out Ogonna Nnamani who is averaging 5.79 kills per game, the best in the Pac-10. Kristin Richards is the second on the squad in kills with 3.78 per game. Richards leads the Cardinal in digs with 3.65 per game, with Lizzie Suiter ranking as the squad's top blocker, averaging 1.55 per game. Washington is hitting .310 per game as a team this season, fourth in the nation, while holding opponents to a mere .142 a game. Freshman Christal Morrison and junior Brie Hagerty lead the UW offense with 4.41 and 4.11 kills per game, respectively. Sophomore Courtney Thompson is at the top in Husky assists, averaging 14.89 per game, good enough to rank her second in the nation. Juniors Candace Lee and Darla Myhre anchor the UW defense. Lee is averaging 5.72 digs per game, placing her first in the conference. Lee broke the UW all-time digs record in the win against Arizona. She now has 1,264 digs in her career, which also ranks 25th on the Pac-10 all-time list. Myhre paces the team with 1.4 blocks per game. After this week's road trip through northern California, the Huskies finish out the regular season at home against USC Nov. 26 and UCLA Nov. 27.
