Fans at Hec Edmondson Pavilion last night were treated to an old-fashioned blowout as the Washington women's basketball team easily defeated northwest rival Oregon State 84-53.
"I liked our intensity," UW coach June Daugherty said. "We had three good days of practice getting ready for Oregon State, and we were more focused on what we wanted to do defensively and offensively."
Washington finishes the week against Oregon 1 p.m. Saturday at Hec Ed.
The game was never in doubt as the Huskies (10-14 Overall, 6-8 Pac-10) used their quick hands to force 25 turnovers to overwhelm the Beavers (6-17, 1-12). The UW committed only 13 turnovers.
Sophomore Cameo Hicks was one rebound shy of a double-double, grabbing nine rebounds and scoring 13 points on 6-11 shooting.
"She scored off the tip and built on it from there," Daugherty said about Hicks. "She really set the table for us tonight."
In the first half, the UW came out fast as Hicks scored on two straight layups, forcing OSU to call a timeout 25 seconds into the game.
The play of the game came at the end of the first half, when Oregon State inbounded the ball with three seconds left after sophomore Breanne Watson made two free throws. The pass was a little high, and went right to i junior Kayla Burt who threw from half-court shot went it as time expired.
"I caught it and I hesitated," Burt said. "At the last second, I threw it up, and as I let it go it felt like it could go and it did."
The half court heave gave Washington a 48-28 lead going into the locker room and was Burt's only three pointer of the game.
The Beavers showed their only signs of life in the game as they came out of the break on an 8-3 run. After that, the UW controlled to game as they coasted to victory.
The lead was stretched to 31 thanks to sharpshooting by reserve freshman Jackie Hollands. She shot 3-3 from beyond the arc.
"We know what this team is capable of, and it showed a little bit of a glimpse of it tonight," Daugherty said.
Freshman Emily Florence dished out five assists on the night, along with scoring 8 points on 3-5 shooting. The Huskies had 22 assists as a team on the night.
All thirteen players that got into the game scored for Washington. Breanne Watson tied Hicks for the team lead with 13 points.
"We talked about wanting to get into our running game and that helped us tremendously tonight," Hicks said. "It was a great game and everyone played hard. I think we are finally learning how to play hard for 40 minutes."
The Beaver's had three players score in double digits on the night. Kim Butler led the team with 17 points on 6-9 shooting. Karen Vickery added 15 points. Shannon Howell had only 10 points in the loss.
