A long season of tough losses makes this weekend feel that much better for the Washington baseball team.
After entering their 2013 season with so much promise, the Huskies struggled for two months only to finally turn things around during the final third of the season. And never has that turnaround been clearer than it was this weekend, when the UW won three close, low-scoring games with rival Washington State to complete its first series sweep of the season.
Over the course of the three-game set, which took place in Pasco, Wash., instead of in Washington State’s normal home in Pullman, Wash., UW pitchers shut down the Cougars, allowing just six runs in the sweep.
In Friday’s series opener, the Huskies (22-31, 13-14 Pac-12) took advantage of two eighth-inning errors from Washington State (21-30, 8-19) to earn a 4-3 win. Jared Fisher started for the UW, allowing two runs in five innings, but reliever Tyler Davis got the win, his second victory of the season. Trevor Dunlap worked the last two innings for his fourth save.
With the game tied at two in the eighth and Jayce Ray on second, Michael Camporeale reached on a WSU error to put men at first and second. Then both runners took off, and a wild throw allowed Ray to score and Camporeale to move to third. Brian Wolfe then laid down a bunt to make the UW’s lead two.
It was the UW’s second successfully executed squeeze bunt of the game, as Camporeale also bunted home Andrew Ely in the fourth inning to tie the game at one. The Huskies took the lead on an RBI single from Trevor Mitsui in the sixth. But the Cougars scored to tie the game in the bottom of the frame on an infield single.
The following day, it was Austin Voth’s time to shine. The UW’s junior ace tossed eight solid innings to lead the Huskies to a 3-1 win. Voth scattered seven singles and one walk over his eight innings of work, striking out six Cougars.
Offensively, three Huskies combined to do most of the damage Saturday. In the third, Ty Afenir reached on an error, moved over on a bunt, and then went to third on an Ely bunt. Ray then knocked in Afenir to give the Huskies a lead.
After Washington State scored in the fourth, the same three players were at it again in the fifth for the UW. Afenir once again led off and singled. He moved over on another bunt and scored on another single from Ely. Ray doubled into the right-field corner, and Ely hustled home to give the UW a 3-1 edge, which would prove to be more than enough for Voth and for Dunlap, who threw a scoreless ninth for his second consecutive save.
In Sunday’s matinee, the Huskies got on the board early and never looked back en route to their 12th win in 19 games dating back exactly one month. They scored one in the first, three in the second, and one in the third, and cruised the rest of the way in a 5-2 win.
Camporeale knocked home the first run of the game with an RBI single for the Huskies. In the second, Afenir continued his solid weekend with a two-run single, then came home on a bunt from Ely. The UW added its final run on a single from freshman Austin Rei.
The early offense was all Zach Wright would need and more. The junior was phenomenal, allowing no runs on six hits in seven innings and striking out four batters.
The Huskies finish up with a tough home series next weekend against Arizona State. It will be the last baseball game played at Husky Ballpark before the stadium undergoes renovations this offseason, though it is expected to be ready for Opening Day of the 2014 season.
