Waves wash out Huskies on the road

After a promising start to its series, the Washington baseball team dropped the last two games of a three-game weekend set to Pepperdine. It was the UW’s sixth series loss in seven series on the season. In what may be a disturbing trend to head coach Lindsay Meggs, the UW offense took a step back after bursting out for 14 runs last Tuesday against Seattle University. The UW (8-21, 2-7 Pac-12) scored just one run over the final two games of the series after getting six in a series-opening win Friday. The Huskies led a furious comeback in the first game, scoring one run in the eighth and four in the ninth to beat the Waves 6-2. The win marked just the second time this season that the Huskies have won consecutive games. Trailing 2-1 heading into the eighth, the Huskies tied the game on an RBI groundout from Robert Pehl. Then, in the ninth, Erik Forgione singled to give the UW its first lead. Ty Afenir doubled home a second run, and Jayce Ray added a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 5-2. Afenir then scored the UW’s sixth and final run on a throwing error. The Huskies got an outstanding relief performance from Tyler Davis, who was rewarded with his first victory of the year. After entering the game for starter Nick Palewicz in the fifth inning, Davis threw four innings of no-hit ball, walking two and striking out six, to earn the win. But on Saturday, the UW could not find a way to get the timely hit, as they lost 1-0 in 11 innings. The Huskies spoiled a masterful start from ace Austin Voth, who allowed just one hit in eight innings while striking out 10. However, Pepperdine pitcher Corey Miller was equally dominant, striking out 10 batters in 10 innings. Both teams had multiple chances to score, but neither did until Pepperdine pushed one across in the 11th. Backup catcher James Grandpre led off with a single. He moved to third on a bunt and a groundout, after which two walks loaded the bases. Hutton Moyer then drove in a clean single off Jacob Coats to bring across the only run of the game. In Sunday afternoon’s rubber match, the Huskies were once again shut down by Pepperdine pitching, losing 4-1. Waves starter Aaron Brown tossed 6 2/3 innings, giving up just one unearned run on six hits, while also homering, earning his third win of the season. The Huskies trailed 2-0 entering the seventh, but they cut the lead in half on an RBI single from Jayce Ray. With two outs, Braden Bishop was caught stealing, attempting to score from third base to end the threat. In the bottom of the frame, Waves third baseman Austin Davidson put the game out of reach with a two-run home run, his fourth of the season. The UW remains in Southern California to play a game Monday afternoon against Cal State Northridge, which will be its eighth consecutive road game. Reach reporter Daniel Rubens at sports@dailyuw.com.
