Men's tennis faces New Mexico, Michigan State

The Washington men's tennis team continues its season this weekend with matches against New Mexico and Michigan State at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. UW coach Matt Anger stated success in the two matches will hinge on how the Huskies get ready for the matches individually and as a team. "For us, we need to be ready and prepared to play our style of tennis," he said. The No. 21 Huskies (2-0 overall) opened the season with wins over Portland and San Francisco last weekend. The UW defeated the Pilots 6-1 and swept the Dons 7-0. Washington faces off against No. 65 New Mexico (0-1) at 4 p.m. today. The UW played the Lobos last year in the first round of the NCAA tournament, coming out with a 4-0 victory. The Huskies ended a successful season for the Lobos last year, when they won the Mountain West conference title and reached the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1999. "We are looking forward to the matches," Anger said. "They are our first matches against ranked teams this year." New Mexico lost its only match of the season last weekend 1-4 to No. 74 Colorado last weekend. While the Lobos have only one ranked individual player, No. 122 Ryan Stotland, they have the No. 3 doubles pair in the country in Stotland and David Kowalski. The duo was 14-5 in the fall, and picked up a victory over the No. 2 doubles team of Sam Warburg and KC Corkery of Stanford. "We have played New Mexico a couple of times the last few years, and the matches have been very good matches," Anger said. "We played them last year in the first round of the NCAA tournament, and we ended up winning 4-0, but it was a very good match." After a day off, the Huskies will play No. 55 Michigan State (4-0) Sunday at 2 p.m. The Spartans come into the match with one ranked player in Senior Andre Formanczky at No. 102. Formanczky along with freshman teammate Nick Rinks make up the No. 47 doubles team. This weekend will mark the first time this season that Michigan State will play ranked teams, starting with New Mexico on tomorrow. Last season the Spartans were 17-13, finishing ninth in the Big Ten and missing the NCAA tournament.
