The Washington men's basketball team has added two walk-on players to its practice squad, one of the players confirmed last night.
Rudy Sharar, a junior guard from Bainbridge Island, said via telephone that head coach Lorenzo Romar called him on Friday and asked if he was interested in joining the practice squad.
Sharar identified the other player as Brendan Sherrer, who is listed in the UW directory as a sophomore. A call to Sherrer was not returned, and his status on the team could not be confirmed. A UW official couldn't confirm that either player had been officially added to the team but said that there were two new players who practiced Friday. Sharar said he and the other new player also practiced with the team Saturday.
Sharar, who played with Gonzaga standout Steven Gray in high school, had an offer to play at Whitman College out of high school but said he hadn't been part of an organized basketball practice since.
"They've been intense," Sharar said of the practices. "It's definitely different playing for a D-I practice than a high-school practice - a lot more intense and a lot more active."
Romar has said in past seasons that he's been hesitant to add walk-ons because they inevitably end up complaining about playing time.
"He just asked me if I would like to be a part of the practice squad, not really the team but just come to practice every day and just work hard and be a good team player and push other guys to get better," Sharar said.
UW's last walk-on was Brandon Burmeister in 2007.
