After Washington volleyball's sweep of the two Oregon schools, and No. 1 Minnesota's loss to Ohio State, the Huskies look to hold the top spot in the polls for the first time in program history.
Washington (12-0 overall, 4-0 Pac-10) defeated Oregon State (8-4, 2-1) in straight games on Saturday to complete the sweep for the weekend. The win put UW at 4-0 in conference play for the first time in school history.
Senior All-American Sanja Tomasevic played a great all-around game for the Huskies, recording 14 kills and 19 digs.
"I was satisfied with everything tonight," sad Tomasevic. "We stayed composed through the whole game, and we just had to take care of our business as usual."
Freshman Christal Morrison added 16 kills and 13 digs, while junior Brie Hagerty added 13 kills in the match.
"I couldn't choose an MVP; everyone out there did a great job today," Morrison said. "I think we did really well."
Coach Jim McLaughlin was satisfied with the team's play against a tough Beaver squad.
"We really passed well and got a nice little rhythm after game one," he said. "Oregon State is a good team, and they're going to beat some people in our conference, and we had to play a good match to beat them, and we did."
On Friday night, UW held Oregon (9-4, 1-2) to a .126 hitting percentage while sweeping the Ducks in three games 30-19, 30-15, 30-25.
The Huskies' attack was sparked by Hagerty, who led the team with 19 kills and a .607 hitting average.
"All of our passers were passing really well," Hagerty said. "Courtney [Thompson] put it up for me to hit, and I just swung high off the hands."
Morrison added 13 kills while Thompson had 51 assists and seven digs.
Despite the win, McLaughlin could still find flaws in his team's play.
"We missed 15 serves, and that's way above the standard we set," he said. "Serving is a critical part of the game so we just have to work on it."
As far as being ranked so highly in the rankings, the Huskies are not going to let that affect their performance.
"It's exciting, but we just need to stay composed because it doesn't matter who's number one now, it matters who's number one in the end," said Morrison.
