Scores improve in round 2

After yesterday's abbreviated second round, the UW women's golf team sits in sole possession of 19th at the NCAA championships. No. 12 Washington carded a team score of 10-over 298 yesterday to shoot 27 over par for the first half of tournament action at Auburn, Ala. Twelve teams will have to complete their second round tomorrow morning, since the threat of lightning ended the day's play. The Huskies are disappointed with their performances so far, said UW coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "Your intent is to win every time you tee it up," she said. "We just haven't put ourselves in position; today was a little better, but we were already in a bad position." No. 2 UCLA took over the top of the leaderboard by driving past round-one leader Oklahoma State and carding a 4-under 572 for the first opening two rounds. First-ranked Duke sits in second at 4 under par, just one stroke off the lead. With two days remaining, Mulflur said the best strategy for the team is to play assertively. "We really have to attack now," she said. "We're in a position that if we want to make any kind of a move we just have to be really aggressive." Sophomore Sung Ea Lee finished the day with a 1-over 73 to bring her two-day total to 5 over. Redshirt sophomore Paige Mackenzie struggled on the front nine today, carding 7 over for the first nine holes before finishing the day with a birdie to shoot 78. "Paige just had two bad holes today," Mulflur said. "She's an All-American, but she can have a bad round every once and a while." Freshman Amber Prange bounced back from a bad first round to shoot a 72 and end the day at even par to come in at 8 over par. Senior Lindsay Morgan completed the scoring for the UW at 9 over par. "We just haven't been able to stay away from the big number," Mulflur said. "We just need to start making a few putts and we'll be fine." The Huskies tee off for round three with Baylor and Texas A&M today at 8 a.m. Tournament play concludes tomorrow.
