The Washington women's basketball team played a thriller at Hec Edmundson Pavilion last night, coming from behind to defeat Minnesota in overtime 72-67.
The Huskies (2-0 overall) upset of the No. 14 Golden Gophers to give the UW the WBCA BTI Classic championship.
Sophomore Cameo Hicks led the team in scoring, putting up 14 points on 5-10 shooting. Kristen O'Neill also put up double figures, posting a total of 10 points.
Fellow sophomore Jill Bell was quiet on the offensive end until overtime, scoring six of her eight points in the extra frame. Bell also grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the team.
"We found out a lot about ourselves today," coach June Daugherty said. "We know we have an enormous amount of athleticism and talent, and if there's 40 or four seconds left, they know to go out there and do everything they can to help their teammates."
Golden Gopher Jamie Broback lead all scorers with 18 points, all while snatching 10 rebounds.
Shooting only 36 percent as a team for the game, Washington was able to keep the game close because Minnesota (1-1) committed 28 turnovers, including 14 steals by the Huskies.
Washington fell down by 10 midway through the first half, but finished strong to go into halftime down just three, with the score at 30-27.
Coming out of the break however, the Husky shooting did not seem to improve, but the Huskies fought through the missed shots to remain within striking distance of the Gophers.
Washington took its first lead of the game on a layup by sophomore Maggie O'Hara with 14:28 left, and the game went back and forth from there until two free throws by sophomore Breanne Watson, with 1:21 left in the game, tied it up at 58-58.
The Huskies had a chance to win in regulation, but a floating shot by Hicks hit off the rim just as time expired.
Going into the overtime period with the momentum and the crowd behind them, Washington overmatched the Gophers as their shooting woes disappeared. The team shot 57 percent in the extra period and out scored Minnesota 14-9 to pull away with the victory.
"In the huddle, [the players] kept talking about playing Husky basketball," Daugherty said. "It was a great character check going to overtime and coming back to win it."
Watson was named the tournament MVP, collecting 11 points and four rebounds last night.
Washington returns to hardwood action Nov. 22 against Michigan in Ann Arbor.
