Sun Devils cool off Huskies

The Washington women's basketball team could not complete the season sweep over Arizona State, falling 69-48 yesterday in Tempe, Ariz. The game was plagued by turnovers on both sides of the court as the two teams combined for 51 miscues, but poor shooting by the UW led to the easy victory for ASU. "We started out early forcing a lot of turnovers," coach June Daugherty said. "They made some great adjustments, and we had to get out of what we were doing and go to something else." Washington ends the regular season at Arizona in Tucson tomorrow at 3 p.m. The Huskies (12-15 Overall, 8-9 Pac-10) shot only 31 percent from the floor as the loss breaks their three-game winning streak. Sophomore Cameo Hicks led Washington, scoring 14 points on 5-for-10 shooting. "We knew coming in that they are a great pressure defense team and we wanted to stay composed, but I think we just let the pressure get the best of us," Hicks said. Arizona State (19-8. 11-6) came quickly from the tip as they built an early eight-point lead by scoring 14 of the first 20 points. The UW tried to fight back, but halftime ended with the Sun Devils up 33-23. "We were able to maintain pretty well for the [first] half, but the second half I just thought we wore down a little bit," Daugherty said. "Credit their pressure for that." In the second half, the Huskies could not stop ASU in the post as junior Kristen Kovesdy scored in the paint on three straight possessions. ASU had 40 points in the paint compared to the UW's 18. "I think we weren't talking enough on defense," Hicks said. "Communication is key when you're playing such a great team with great posts and guards, but we lacked a lot of communication on defense." Junior Kayla Burt symbolized the Huskies' shooting woes as she hit just two of nine from the floor. However, she did manage to grab four rebounds and dish out three assists in the game. Sophomore Dominique Banks and junior Kristen O'Neill both chipped in nine points. Freshman Emily Florence was scorless, but lead the team in assists with six. ASU shot 61 percent on the night, led by Kovesdy's 7-for-7 shooting. She finished the game with 14 points. Sophomore Aubrey Johnson also had 14 points on the night for the Sun Devils. "We did not play well, end of story," Daugherty said. "Let's get back in the gym and let's get better and get ready for Arizona."
