No. 1 Huskies battle Bears, Cardinals

The Washington women's volleyball looks to continue its season-long winning streak, as it hosts California and Stanford this weekend. The No. 1 Huskies (15-0 overall, 7-0 Pac-10) face the No. 13 Golden Bears today at 7 p.m., and the No. 11 Cardinal Saturday at 7 p.m. The UW dispatched Arizona and Arizona State last weekend, making them one of only three undefeated teams left in the nation, the others being No. 3 Hawaii and No. 7 Ohio State. The Golden Bears (10-6, 5-2) have won the previous three meetings with Washington for third place in the conference with USC, after victories against Oregon and Oregon State last weekend. Freshman Angie Pressey leads the California attack, which will send out three players averaging more than three kills per game. Pressey leads the team with 3.93 kills per game, with Gabrielle Anthony adding 3.76 kills per game. Samantha Carter is tops in assists, averaging 13. The UW counters with its own talented freshman -- outside hitter Christal Morrison. Morrison was named Pac-10 player of the week for her performances last weekend in Arizona, dishing out 38 kills and 27 digs in the two matches. Stanford (14-4, 6-1) has won four of its last five matches and look to avenge last seasons' NCAA tournament loss to the Huskies. The Huskies upset the Cardinal in four games in last years' Sweet Sixteen to reach the Elite Eight for only the second time in school history. Stanford owns the all-time series record with Washington at 37-4, but the UW has won two of the past three. Second place Stanford sits one game behind the Huskies in the Pac-10, led by 2004 Olympian, Ogonna Nnamani, who paces the offense with a conference best 5.70 kills per game. Stanford will look for at least a tie the UW atop the Pac-10. Bryn Kehoe leads the squad in assists with 11.61 assists per game. Washington returns to the road next weekend when they head south to face Oregon State Oct. 28 and Oregon Oct. 29.
