No. 1 Volleyball defeats Cougars

Washington volleyball remained perfect this season, defeating in-state rival Washington State in three straight games last Friday. As the volleyball version of the Apple Cup, bragging rights were at stake and emotions were at high levels. "Before the game everyone was really excited," said senior Sanja Tomasevic. "We already beat Oregon and Oregon State, and after this game, if nothing else, we are number one in the Northwest." The No. 1 Huskies (13-0 overall, 5-0 Pac-10) limited the Cougars (3-14, 0-5) to a mere .036 hitting percentage for the match, including a .111 in the first game of the sweep. Washington won the first two games by double-digits, taking the opener 30-15 and the second 30-17. In the third game, the Cougars tied up the score at 17; however, junior Brie Hagerty responded with a kill on the very next point that led to five straight points for the Huskies. The UW never looked back, winning the game 30-20 and completing the sweep. "From defense to offense, it was just an overall steady game for us," said junior middle blocker Darla Myhre, who had five kills and two solo blocks on the evening. Tomasevic led the Husky attack, racking up 19 kills on a .447 hitting percentage. As a team, Washington hit .358. "I felt pretty good, and the stats showed that I did pretty good, too," Tomasevic said. "My passing was off tonight, but luckily other people were able to pass." Sophomore Courtney Thompson was one, recording 41 assists on the night. On the Cougar side, sophomore Jennifer Todd recorded seven kills on a .313 hitting percentage. Head coach Jim McLaughlin found deficiencies in the team's play, but was pleased with the end result. "We were good most of the match, but there were times that we didn't put the whole thing together," said McLaughlin. "We got the win against our rivals, and that's always a good win."
