No. 1 Huskies outlast OSU

Kicking off the second half of their conference season, the 1st-ranked UW women's volleyball squad rallied yesterday to remain undefeated with a victory over Northwest rival Oregon State 3-2 in Corvallis. Washington (18-0 overall, 10-0 Pac-10) fell behind 2-0 for the first time all season before winning the next three games to take the victory. The Beavers (8-11, 2-8) was able to take a 1-0 lead by easily winning the first game 30-20. In the second game, it was a fight to the finish with OSU barely edging UW 39-37. The Huskies, staring at the possibility of their first loss of the season, did not give up, besting the Beavers in the next two games, 30-16 and 30-27, to put the match in a 2-2 deadlock. Washington won the tiebreaking fifth game 15-10 to maintain the winning streak. OSU out-blocked the UW 16 to 11, but it was not enough as the Huskies was able to out-hit their opponent .246 to .191. Washington was held to its second lowest hitting percentage of the season. Sophomore setter Courtney Thompson came two assists away from her career high against Minnesota last year, as she dished out 78 in the UW win. She also had 10 kills on the night. Washington recorded 87 kills and had four players in double figures. Senior Kaitlin Leck led the team on the offensive side. Leck registered a match-high 27 kills and 16 digs. Junior libero Candace Lee played impressive defense, as she was able to rack up 35 digs in the match, setting a new personal career high. Her previous high was 33, achieved versus UCLA last October. Freshman Christal Morrison racked up 20 kills and 17 digs, while Junior Darla Myhre added 11 kills. The Huskies will to continue conference play tonight when they face Oregon at 7 p.m. in Eugene. The Ducks (9-11, 1-9) have lost its past eight matches. Sarah Mason leads Oregon with 3.86 kills per game with Kelly Russell closely behind at 3.49 kpg. Heather Madison paces the squad in assists with 10.55 per game.
