Out of the doghouse

After struggling for so much of the season, the Washington baseball team just might be turning things around. The Huskies, winners of two of three games over the weekend against No. 5 Oregon State, went on the road and took the first of their two-game series with No. 22 Gonzaga, 6-2, on Tuesday night. With the win, the UW has now won three of its past four games for the first time all season. The UW (12-26, 5-10 Pac-12) got on the board early, thanks to the bat of Michael Camporeale. The senior outfielder bashed the first pitch he saw from Derek Callahan out to right field for a two-out, two-run home run in the first inning to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead. It was Camporeale’s fourth home run of the season, all of which have come in the past nine games. That would be all the support the UW pitching staff would need but not all it would get. In the second, the Huskies extended their lead when Ryan Wiggins led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. After an out, he scored on a single from Ty Afenir to extended the lead to three. UW starter Troy Rallings ran into problems in the fourth inning of his second career start. The freshman gave up back-to-back singles with one out and then was taken out after throwing three balls to Alex Bonczyk and was replaced by Trevor Dunlap. Dunlap threw a ball to walk Bonczyk and followed that with a run-scoring walk to Gonzaga’s Billy Moon. Dunlap quickly settled down and delivered quality innings for head coach Lindsay Meggs once again. He struck out four, walked two, and allowed three hits over 3 2/3 shutout innings. Dunlap has now allowed just one earned run over his last 9 1/3 innings. Rallings ran into some trouble throughout his relatively short outing, but he only gave up one run in his 3 1/3 innings. He allowed five hits and two walks while striking out one. The Huskies extended their lead in the seventh with three important runs. With one out, third baseman Andrew Ely and second baseman Robert Pehl hit back-to-back bases loaded RBI singles. Then Camporeale picked up his third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 6-1 UW. Right-hander Tyler Davis came out of the bullpen and worked the final two innings for the Huskies. He allowed an RBI single with two outs in the ninth, but he buckled down and got a flyout to end the ballgame. The teams finish off their series Wednesday at 3 p.m. After that, the Huskies will come home and entertain California in a three-game series this weekend.
