The Washington women's volleyball squad went five games last night before suffering its first loss of the season against Stanford.
The No. 1 Huskies (22-1 overall, 14-1 Pac-10) try to get back on the winning track today as they head to Berkeley to face No. 14 California at 7 p.m.
The UW held a two game to none lead over the No. 9 Cardinal (20-6, 12-3), winning the games 30-28 and 30-11. After the break, Stanford came out and won the next two games 30-27 and 34-32, evening the match at two.
From there, it came down to a 15-point tiebreaker to determine the winner.
In the fifth game, the Huskies held a six-point lead at 10-4, but Stanford was able to stay in the game. A kill by freshman Christal Morrison gave the UW a 14-11 lead and match point, but Stanford fought back. Eventually, the Cardinal went up by one point, when an ace by Jennifer Hucke won the game and the match 20-18.
"It was just one of those matches where we had some chances, but their All-American, Ogonna Nnamani, played really well at critical times," said coach Jim McLaughlin of his team's first loss of the season. "It was a close match that could have gone either way; we had some chances to win the thing, but they just made some big plays."
Nnamani had a match-high 37 kills on the night, breaking her previous career-high.
Even in the loss, the UW still out-hit Stanford .255 to .223. The Cardinal defense made up for its offensive inefficiency by having a 12 digs advantage over the Huskies, 84 to 72.
Morrison led the Husky offense as she registered 22 kills on a .306 hitting percentage. Junior Darla Myhre also had a good match as she did not commit a single error and posted a .545 hitting percentage with 12 kills.
Also with double-digit kills on the night for Washington were junior Brie Hagerty, with 18, and senior Kaitlin Leck, with 16.
"We fought hard and we went for it and remained aggressive most of the night," McLaughlin said. "We have nothing to hang our heads about, we just need to keep doing what we're doing and keep preparing."
The Huskies now try to split the weekend series in the Bay Area as they face the Golden Bears (15-9, 10-5).
Gabrielle Abernathy leads Cal in kills with 3.50 per game with Camille Leffall at a close second with 3.05 kpg. Samantha Carter paces the team in assists with 13.71 a game.
The Bear defense is lead by Angie Pressey who averages 2.87 digs per game, with Leffall adding a team-high 1.17 blocks per game.
