This week in Husky history: Taylor wins Hogan Award

On May 24, 2010, Nick Taylor became the first UW golfer to ever win the Ben Hogan Award, given each year to the most outstanding player in college golf. For Taylor, it was the cherry on top of a career filled with accolades. The Hogan Award takes into account all competitions within a 12-month period. It capped off a season to remember for the native of Abbotsford, British Columbia. During the 2009-10 season, Taylor finished in the top 10 in nine of 12 events. He spent 21 weeks at the top of the World Amateur Golf Rankings from June to November 2009. In that summer’s U.S. Open, Taylor was a low amateur and tied for 36th place. Taylor won his second-consecutive Pac-10 Co-Golfer of the Year award, and was named a First Team PING All-American for the second straight year. He was the fifth player in league history to win the award multiple times. Taylor was one of three Huskies who won awards at the end of the team’s Pac-10 championship season. Senior Richard Lee was named to the All-Pac-10 First Team, and freshman Chris Williams won the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. However, the UW’s season came to an end in the quarterfinals of match play of the NCAA championships when the Huskies lost to Oregon 3-2. After graduating from the UW at the end of his senior season, Taylor turned professional. He joined the PGA Tour Canada in 2012 and had three top-10 finishes in his first season on tour, with a high of third place. Three years after Taylor won the Hogan, another UW golfer took home the same award this season. Williams was named the recipient of the 2013 Ben Hogan Award on Monday in Fort Worth, Texas, to become the UW’s second winner. Williams, the world’s top-ranked amateur, has been named All-Conference all four years at the UW, and he leads a group of Huskies into the NCAA championships next week in Atlanta, Ga.
