Year in review: Moment of the year

From the opening of new stadiums to multiple Washington teams making runs in the NCAAs, there have been quite a few notable achievements in the 2013-14 academic year. Those achievements will be remembered as snapshots, moments in a year filled with fantastic ones. Here are a few Daily sportswriters’ picks for the best moment of the year. Nick Bragg Baseball: Climbing the ranks After stringing together seven straight wins, the Washington baseball team cracked Baseball America’s top 5 for the first time in school history on May 12. The Huskies were undefeated in the weekend series up to that point and really started turning heads on the national level. They lost the next two series and missed a bid to host the NCAA regionals, but head coach Lindsay Meggs and the new Husky Ballpark have changed the identity of the UW baseball program for the better. Joe Veyera Volleyball: Hometown Final Four While the Washington volleyball team’s season ended in a three-set sweep at the hands of eventual national champion Penn State on Dec. 19, appearing in its first Final Four since 2006 is a feat worth celebrating. Behind a quartet of seniors — Jenni Nogueras, Jenna Orlandini, Kylin Muñoz, and Gabbi Parker -— the 32-3 Huskies proved they were one of the best teams in the nation, and had the opportunity to play in front of a sold-out hometown crowd at KeyArena. The team’s comeback after being down two sets against USC at the Galen Center to reach the Final Four will forever go down as an instant classic. Daniel Rubens Soccer: Success over Seattle U In UW history, there has never been a soccer game with as much excitement, drama, and noise as the one the UW played against Seattle University in their first NCAA tournament game on Nov. 24. In front of more than 3,000 fans at Husky Soccer Stadium, the UW scored four goals in the first 66 minutes to build a 4-0 lead before two late Redhawks goals made it 4-2. Because of the magnitude of the game, as well as the fantastic season the Huskies had, this game was the most important one for the UW in any sport in the 2013-14 school year. Kevin Dowd Football: Reining in the Broncos Washington 38, Boise State 6. The assignment for these things was to write three to five sentences, but I couldn’t possibly do this game justice in such limited space. Look, two sentences gone already. So here’s a limerick instead: There once was a game in a stadium new, the men in purple ’gainst the boys in blue. Things got ugly. The Huskies romped, and when it was over, the Broncos, they clomped back to Boise, but left their coach. Woohoo! Erik Erickson

Football: Sankey’s record-breaking season With such a strong history of great running backs to go through the UW program, Bishop Sankey eclipsing Corey Dillon’s single-season rushing record in the Apple Cup will be something I will always remember as a Husky fan. Sankey was a player you could always count on game in and game out, and his presence in the background will always be missed. His 1,870 rushing yards, good for fourth in the nation, could go down as one of the greatest single-season performances in Husky history in any sport. Reach the Sports staff at sports@dailyuw.com.
