Those resentful of Washington's difficult non-conference football schedules the past few seasons received good news on Tuesday.
The school announced some changes in its future schedules, including the removal of a home-and-away series against BYU that was slated for 2011 and 2012. The Huskies will instead play Eastern Washington in 2011 and are still searching for an opponent to replace BYU in the 2012 game. UW was scheduled to play only five home games in 2012 before yesterday's announcement.
The game against Eastern will mark the first time the Huskies have ever played against a lower-division school. Notre Dame, USC and UCLA are the only other schools in the country that have never faced a non-Division-1 school.
Washington also announced a home-and-away series against Hawaii for 2013 and 2015, as well as a home-and-away series against Wisconsin in 2017 and 2018. The Huskies will face Hawaii in Honolulu in 2013 and at home in 2015; they will play Wisconsin at home in 2018 and travel to Madison in 2017.
"I think it will be a great thing for the Pacific Northwest to play a team like Eastern Washington that has a solid regional appeal," head coach Steve Sarkisian said in a release. "Hawaii and Wisconsin are two programs that annually compete at a high level and should provide really strong tests for our program."
BYU remains on the schedule for next season, when BYU commit Jake Heaps, a nationally recruited quarterback from Skyline High School in Sammamish, Wash., is expected to start for them. The cancellation of the 2011 and 2012 games removes the possibility of the Huskies facing Heaps three times in his college career.
UW hasn't faced Wisconsin since a 27-10 win in 1992, and has played the Badgers just four times. One of those was a 44-8 Husky win in the 1960 Rose Bowl.
Syracuse and Nebraska are UW's other two non-conference opponents next season, and the Huskies will face Hawaii and Nebraska in addition to the Eastern game in 2011. Nevada and a trip to LSU await the UW in 2012.
