Even with senior Sanja Tomasevic sidelined with a broken hand, Washington volleyball continued its season-long winning streak last weekend in Arizona, defeating Arizona State 3-0 and Arizona 3-1.
No. 1 Washington (15-0 overall, 7-0 Pac-10) swept the Sun Devils (8-8, 3-5) in three straight games last Friday and lost only one game in defeating Arizona 3-1 last Saturday.
Saturday night, the No. 1 Huskies (15-0 overall, 7-0 Pac-10) went into Tucson to play their first ranked team since defeating UCLA and USC three weeks ago.
No. 22 Arizona (11-7, 3-5), coming off of a sweep of Washington state last Friday, had strong offensive play, recording 73 kills in the four-game match. However, it was not enough to come out with the victory as Washington won 3-1 with game scores of 30-28, 30-22, 26-30 and 30-24.
The Wildcats were able to hit the ball at a high level against the tough UW defense, hitting .242 on the night.
For the UW, freshman Christal Morrison recorded 20 kills and 12 digs, with senior Kaitlin Leck collecting her second double-digit attack total of the weekend with 18.
Sophomore Courtney Thompson dished out 55 assists along with 10 digs on the night.
On the Wildcat's side of the net, junior Kim Glass was the main weapon for Arizona, recording 28 kills to lead both teams, but also had 14 errors to give her a hitting percentage of .187.
In Tempe last Friday, the Husky defense kept the Sun Devil offense in check all night. The UW held ASU to a .154 hitting percent and came up with 65 digs as a team. Junior libero Candace Lee led the team with 24 digs in the match.
Morrison paced the Huskies with 18 kills and recorded 15 digs in the three games. Both Leck and junior Brie Hagerty added double-digit kills, with 14 and 17 respectively.
The Sun Devil front line was able to stifle Washington throughout the match, keeping the games close, recording 12 blocks on the night. It also held Washington to a .299 hitting percentage.
Sophomore outside hitter Nicole Morton led the ASU attack, recording 18 kills with a .359 hitting average during the matchup.
The Huskies return to home action this weekend to take on No. 13 California and 12th ranked Stanford this weekend.
