Huskies survive Cougs

The Washington volleyball team was pushed to the limit by Washington State, needing five games before finishing off the Cougs 3-2 last Friday. The No. 1 Huskies (20-0 overall, 12-0 Pac-10) went to five games for only the third time this season, but the second time in the last three games. The UW needed five to defeat Oregon State Oct. 28. Washington was on the verge of a sweep, dominating the Cougars (4-21, 1-11 Pac-10) by taking a two-games-to-none lead with 30-11 and 30-27 victories. WSU fought back to win the next two 26-30 and 27-30 to put the match in a deadlock. The Huskies then won the tie-breaking fifth 15-9 to put away the Cougars and extend their winning streak to 20 games. One more victory would tie the squad with the school record set by the1977 team that won 21 straight games. Sophomore setter Courtney Thompson orchestrated the Washington offense, dishing out 73 assists in the five games and even putting down two kills. She also added three service aces in the match. Freshman outside hitter Christal Morrison led the team in kills with 26, and had a game high .367 hitting percentage. Outside hitters junior Brie Hagerty and senior Katlin Leck both also posted double digit kills with 19 and 18, respectively. Washington hit .249 as a team in the match. The Husky defense once again stepped up to lead the team to victory. They were able to hold the Washington State offense to a mere .149 hitting percentage, including a -.030 mark in game one. Four Huskies finished the match with double-digit digs. Junior libero Candace Lee led the UW defense with 29 digs. Junior defensive specialist Danka Danicic was second with 16, while Thompson had 12 and Morrison added 13. Junior middle blocker Darla Myhre had eight blocks on the night, while Leck added seven. On the Washington State side of the net, Jennifer Tood led the team with 19 kills, but hit only .167. Jen Barkus added 14 kills. The Cougars outblocked the Huskies 16 to 12.5. Washington returns to home action this week, facing Arizona on Thursday and Arizona State on Friday.
