UW ends Challenge in fifth

The Washington women's golf team bounced back from a tough round Tuesday to finish into the top five of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge yesterday in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. Led by junior Sung Ea Lee, the No. 4 Huskies shot the lowest team round with 294 in the final round to finish the event in fifth place at 54-over par, 10 strokes behind tournament winner Pepperdine. "It's not a hard golf course, but the greens are very difficult. If you get it in the wrong place you can really pay for it," coach Mary Lou Mulflur said. "Today, I just think we didn't get in the wrong places as often." Lee was the top Husky yesterday. She carded a round low 3-under par to move up from 57th to 15th. She shot a 226 for the three-day event to finish tied with teammate freshman Amy Wang and four others at 13-over par. "It was very impressive for this golf course," Mulflur said about Lee's performance. "She just played really solid. It's the third tournament in a row that she has finished with a sub-par round on the last day." Pepperdine won the tournament at 44-over par with 896, beating out defending tournament champion UCLA, who finished in second at 46-over par with 898. Duke was third at 48-over par with 900. Junior Paige Mackenzie was the UW's highest finisher, at ninth, carding a 3-over par with 74 to come in ninth at 222. The finish marks the 13th time Mackenzie has placed in the top 10, tying her for third on the UW's all-time list. Also scoring for Washington were sophomore Amber Prange and freshman Kim Shin. Prange placed 48th, at 235. Shin carded a 78 on the day to finish tied for 61st at 238. Duke's Brittany Lang was the individual winner, leading at the end of each of the three rounds. Lang finished the tournament at even par, winning by four strokes over Charlotte Mayorkas of UCLA. Kristen White of Ohio State placed third at 7-over par with 220. The Huskies return to action March 8 to take part in the Spartan Invitational in Monterey, Calif.
