Huskies climb leader board

After posting their best single-round score at the national championships yesterday, the No. 12 Washington women's golf team moved up five places on the leader board to land in a four-way tie for 14th. During yesterday's third round, the Huskies carded a 9-over 297 to record a 36-over 900 overall, a total shared by New Mexico, Furman and Arizona. The final round of the tournament is set for today, with the UW partnering with the Wildcats and Tennessee for a 9 a.m. tee time. Washington had its highest finish, 16th, in 1995 and 2001. "We can't seem to stay away from the big number," said UW coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "We're just struggling with too many doubles and triples we have to count in the totals." Tournament-leader UCLA, ranked second, separated itself from the pack yesterday, posting a three-day total of 858 at 6 under par. Tenth-ranked Oklahoma State passed top-ranked Duke to take over second place while sitting at 1 under par, five strokes off the lead. Bruin Susie Mathews and Oklahoma State's Karin Sjodin are tied for first at 8 under. Leading the way for the Huskies yesterday was redshirt sophomore Paige Mackenzie, who is knotted for 23rd. She shot a 3-under 69 during the third round to bring her total for the past three days to 4-over 220. "Paige played really well," Mulflur said. "Everybody has played well at times; we just need to get everybody going at the same time [tomorrow]." Sophomore Sung Ea Lee carded a 5-over 77 yesterday and enters the final round tied for 62nd. "I didn't make as many putts as I did in the last two days," Lee said. "I had a tough start and it just never got going; you get a wrong bounce and it can cost a big number." Freshman Amber Prange and senior Lindsay Morgan finished the day in a tie for 95th. After a 13-over performance Wednesday, freshman Ashley Bickerton bounced back to shoot an even-par 72 to land in 107th. "They've all had good rounds either at par or right around or even: Paige was under par today," Mulflur said. "Tomorrow we're just going to go out there; our goal is to have everybody clicking."
