Song to start your week: ‘History Eraser,’ Courtney Barnett

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably dealing with a case of the middle-of-midterms, back-to-school-after-long-weekend, post-Valentine’s-Day-candy-hangover blues. In this case, there is only one thing you can do to help cure your case: Listen to an absurd amount of Courtney Barnett.

Every song Barnett has written is brilliant, and I would recommend them all, but the first (and best) one to get you acquainted with her music is “History Eraser.” Originally released in October 2013, this song is the perfect track to get you past the hump in the middle of the quarter.

This song will erase the history of your long weekend and the long winter we’ve had so far. A breath of fresh air is found in Barnett’s lyrics, along with notes of escapism, dreaming, and parties. However, the very real undertone of feeling hung up on someone is strung throughout the song, making this song perfect to get over any melancholiness you might be feeling while having to return to classes after a drawn-out Valentine’s Day weekend.

Whether your Valentine’s weekend was full of brunches, chocolates, or a loved one, Barnett’s creative and fast-paced lyrics matched with distorted guitar riffs and surf-rock drumming are sure to welcome the week in the right way. So put on your headphones, and “drink ‘til the moon becomes the sun”  with Barnett as you walk to class.
