No. 1 Washington slams Sun Devils

While a silent auction was happening in the concourse of Hec Edmundson Pavilion last Friday, the Washington volleyball squad was anything but quiet on the court. Facing Pac-10 opponent Arizona State (10-14 overall, 5-10 Pac-10), the No. 1 Huskies (22-0, 14-0) were able to come up with their 22nd straight victory in a three game sweep. Game one started out close as the two teams were knotted up 15-15 early until four straight points by the Huskies opened up a 19-15 lead. However, unforced errors kept ASU in the game as they slowly fought back. ASU went on a 6-2 run near the end of the game to tie up the score again at 28, but as errors helped keep the team in the game early on, a crucial error on the next point set up game point for the UW. A kill by junior Brie Hagerty sealed the win for the Huskies. Washington had nine errors in the match to four for the Sun Devils. The Huskies started out game two slowly as Arizona State took a 3-1 lead, but UW answered with six straight points to put the team up for good 9-5. Washington clinched the game on an 8-1 run that included three service aces by junior Jessica Veris. The Huskies started game three sluggish as well, but fought back to take a 10-9 lead before Arizona State tied it up at 13-13. Washington ran off four straight points to open up a 17-13 lead and did not look back. Junior Darla Myhre had three of her five kills in the game and added two blocks. Washington had seven aces with only five service errors in the game. "We served well, and that's a nice ratio for us," coach Jim McLauglin said. "I like the way we made them handle the ball, and we were able to force them to handle it in critical situations." A pair of Huskies ended the match with double figure kills. Hagerty led the team with 15 kills on a .324 hitting percentage while freshman Christal Morrison added 14 of her own. Sophomore Courtney Thompson led the offense, dishing out 45 serves and two kills. "We played hard, but our energy level was low," McLauglin said, but noted that the Huskies were able to come out on top because "it was good when we had to get it going." The UW defense was tough on the night. Junior Candace Lee followed up her record-setting performance on Thursday with 25 digs Friday night. Myhre had 6 blocks in the match. "I know we have a lot of improvement and I know we can play a lot better, but it was a good match," Myhre said. "These last two nights it was really nice to win in three after playing five games against both Oregon State and Washington State -- it was a big confidence boost for us." The Huskies take the court again Thursday in Palo Alto against Stanford.
