Huskies upset Beavers for series win

When red-hot Oregon State and ice-cold Washington met this weekend, the roles of favorite and underdog were clearly defined. The Beavers entered the series having won four games in a row, with just two conference losses total. Meanwhile, the Huskies began the set with three Pac-12 wins and a 9-25 overall record. However, sometimes teams don’t play the roles assigned to them. After Friday’s series opener was rained out, the struggling Huskies responded with a shocking sweep in Saturday’s doubleheader to earn a series victory, winning 5-1 in the first game and 10-3 in the second game. Oregon State recovered to take Sunday’s series finale, 8-0. While the series finale was a low note to end on, the Huskies were encouraged by the series win over a national powerhouse. “You have to feel good about winning two out of three against a team playing as well as they are,” head coach Lindsay Meggs said. “[Sunday] was a disappointing day, but we feel good about the weekend as a whole after the work we did yesterday.” Significant rain postponed Friday’s game, and the teams made it up as part of a doubleheader Saturday. In the first game, the UW got a very good start from right-hander Jared Fisher, who went seven innings to earn his first career win, allowing no runs on five hits while walking one and striking out two. The game was destined to be a pitchers’ duel, as neither team scored until the Huskies broke through in the sixth. After loading the bases with one out, the UW got back-to-back-to-back RBI singles from Joe Meggs, Braden Bishop, and Ty Afenir. They added two more in the following inning on a single from Trevor Mitsui and a fielder’s choice from Ryan Wiggins. In the second game of the day, the Huskies put together an eight-run rally in the bottom of the eighth to win consecutive games for the third time this season. Entering the bottom of the eighth trailing by a run, the Huskies scored eight times in the frame to stun the Beavers. Michael Camporeale tied the game with an RBI single, then scored, along with Erik Forgione, on a two-run double from Mitsui. Joe Meggs and Bishop each drove in runs, and the Huskies added another on a wild pitch. Forgione drove one in with an infield single, and Mitsui was credited with his third RBI of the inning when he walked with the bases loaded. “The hitting is contagious,” Lindsay Meggs said. “It was just one of those deals where they were a little erratic and opened the door for us, and our guys took some good at-bats. It was great to see.” In all, 14 Huskies batted in the inning. The half inning took 47 minutes to complete, and the Huskies scored more runs in the inning than they had in all but four entire games this season. After being swept Saturday, the Beavers came out with a vengeance Sunday, scoring five times in the first inning on six hits. UW starter Tyler Davis did not make it out of the inning, as he was charged for all five runs in two-thirds of an inning. Oregon State lefty Ben Wetzler shut down the UW en route to a complete game shutout. Wetzler allowed just four singles over his nine-inning outing, walking one and striking out six. The Huskies now travel to Gonzaga for a two-game, midweek series. Reach reporter Daniel Rubens at sports@dailyuw.com. Twitter: @drubens12
