Ty Afenir (3) and the UW offense had a performance of epic-proportions, highlighted by a 23-run outburst in Friday’s win over Arizona.

UW bats power through Wildcats to win series

It was an offensive outburst of historic proportions. And it led to an enormous series victory for the Washington baseball team. After taking the series opener in one of the biggest blowouts in school history, the Washington baseball team won Saturday’s second game to steal its series against defending national champion Arizona. Although the Huskies lost Sunday’s series finale, they have now won seven of their last 11 games to creep up the Pac-12 standings. It was their first series win in Tucson since 1999. In Friday night’s series opener, the Huskies (16-29, 8-13 Pac-12) collected 30 hits in a historic offensive explosion that ended in a 23-1 UW victory. All nine UW starters had multiple hits, and seven had three or more. For a team that has had spotty offensive production, the outburst was a welcomed rare sight. “I’m sure I probably did something like that in little league but nothing like that at a college or high school level,” senior Michael Camporeale said. “It’s a lot of fun to able to do something like that.” After scoring one run in each of the first two innings, the UW’s offense erupted, scoring five in the third and six in both the fourth and fifth. Remarkably, the Huskies batted around in each of those three innings, and they led 19-1 after the fifth. There were multiple standouts for the UW. Camporeale was 3-for-5 with a three-run home run and a run-scoring double. Designated hitter Robert Pehl was 4-for-6 with two doubles and five RBIs. In just his fourth start of the season, catcher Parker Guinn had four hits in five trips and drove in three runs. While the story of the game was unquestionably the offense, starting pitcher Jared Fisher had his third excellent outing in a row. He gave up eight hits and one run in eight innings of work to earn his second win of the season. He has now allowed one earned run in 24 innings over his last three starts. Saturday’s game was altogether different. After scoring at will Friday, the UW struggled to get much going Saturday, but it scraped one run across in the eighth to win 2-1. Brian Wolfe gave the UW the lead in the third with a single, but Arizona tied the game the following inning on a double. The game was tied until the eighth, when Camporeale and Wolfe started the inning with consecutive singles. After an out, Joe Meggs hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Camporeale and gave the UW a lead it would not relinquish. Austin Voth followed Fisher’s performance with a solid one of his own, tossing 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball. He allowed seven hits, walked three, and struck out three. Trevor Dunlap came out of the bullpen and retired all four batters he faced to earn his first save. “Jared has been great lately, and he pitched really well Friday,” Camporeale said. “Austin did his thing again. He’s been the best pitcher on our staff, and he should be a top draft pick. Our pitching staff was solid this weekend, which complemented our offense nicely.” The Huskies had a chance to complete their first sweep of the season Sunday, but they dropped the finale 5-3. Four UW pitchers combined to allow six hits and just one earned run over eight innings, but the UW’s defense was charged with three costly errors, which allowed the Wildcats to salvage one game. The UW got on the board in the first on a leadoff single from Braden Bishop, a sacrifice bunt, a steal of third, and a run-scoring groundout. Arizona got runs in the second and third to take a lead, but the Huskies tied the game on a sacrifice fly from Ty Afenir. They then took the lead in the sixth on a leadoff triple from Jayce Ray and a single from Camporeale. But, in the seventh, the Wildcats put three across to take a lead they would not give back. Arizona got an RBI groundout to tie the game, followed by a two-out, two-run single from Riley Moore to go up 5-3. The Huskies come home for a single midweek game against Seattle University on Tuesday. They will then host Utah next weekend in a three-game Pac-12 set.
