Tomasevic injured, No. 1 Huskies visit Arizona

After two weekends at home, the Washington women's volleyball team hits the road again to take on both Arizona and Arizona State, but will be without senior outside hitter Sanja Tomasevic. Tomasevic, a second team All-American last year, suffered a hand injury in practice yesterday when her right hand struck against a wall during a diving drill. Surgery is scheduled for today, and she is expected to be out for four to five weeks. "I'm sad that I got hurt, but this time off will allow some of my other nagging injuries to heal before post-season," Tomas. The No. 1 Huskies (13-0 Overall, 5-0 Pac-10) pushed their season-opening win streak to 13 last Friday in a three-game sweep of Washington State. The UW comes into this weekend's matchups as one of the four undefeated collegiate volleyball teams left in the nation. Whether they end the weekend that way will depend on if the squad sticks to its philosophy, according to sophomore setter Courtney Thompson. "We're excited to get back on the road," she said. "We approach every game the same no matter who we're playing, and we just need to do our job and we should be okay." With Tomasevic sidelined for the weekend, the Huskies will have the rely more on junior outside hitter Brie Hagerty. She had nine kills last weekend, with a .305 hitting percentage against Washington State. The Huskies play Arizona State (7-7, 2-4) tonight, a team that picked up its first pair of conference victories last weekend against Oregon and Oregon State. Last year, the match up was one-sided, as the Sun Devils won only one game in the two matches against the UW. Nicole Morton leads all ASU players with 3.53 kills per game. The Huskies visit Tucson tomorrow for a match up against the No. 22 Wilcats (8-6, 2-4). The two teams split their pair of matches last year as they went on to finish the season in a tie for fifth place in the Pac-10. The UA attack is led by outside hitter Kim Glass, who has 4.55 kills per game on the season. "Kim Glass is a really physical player," Thompson said. "We play a lot of physical players; in the Pac-10 that's kind of how everyone is."
