The Washington men's tennis team will play its third straight top-25 opponent tomorrow when it faces Pepperdine at 5 p.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The No. 14 Huskies (7-0 overall) defeated three ranked opponents last weekend at the Great Northwest Shootout in Seattle, helping them rise up four spots in the ITA poll. The UW bested No. 43 Minnesota 4-0 last Friday, No. 11 Ohio State 4-1 last Saturday and No. 17 Tulane 4-3 Sunday.
Sophomore Alex Slovic played singles for the first time this season against Tulane. Slovic, ranked No. 9, who had been limited to doubles action due to injury, defeated No. 81 David Goulet 6-4, 6-2 in No. 2 singles.
The No. 24 Waves (4-1) come to Seattle after defeating UC-Irvine 5-2 Wednesday. Their only loss this season was to USC Jan. 27.
"We played Pepperdine two years ago in an event, and we were able to pull it out 4-1," UW coach Matt Anger said. "Three of their six starters are back from that team, so I know it will be a very good match."
Pepperdine has two players ranked in the top-100. Junior Pedro Rico is the Waves highest ranked player at No. 13. Junior Scott Doerner is ranked No. 88. Rico and Doerner also make up the Waves' top doubles pair, ranked No. 26.
"They are very strong at the top, and I think that they have good depth, as well," Anger said. "They are strong throughout the lineup."
The last meeting between the two teams was in 2003, when the UW won 4-1. Washington holds a 2-1 advantage in the series between the two teams.
In order to come out on top, Anger states the Huskies has to focus on themselves.
"For us, it is important for us to start well as always and sustain it," Anger said. "We have to start well and sustain that play throughout."
