Huskies extend winning streak to eight with sweep of Beavers

The No. 2 Washington volleyball team claimed a commanding victory over Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore., on Wednesday. Sweeping the Beavers in three sets, 25-19, 25-10, 25-21, the Huskies (25-2, 15-2 Pac-12) extended their winning streak to eight matches. The UW was able to show its depth against the Beavers (5-22, 3-14 Pac-12) in set one, coming out with a well-balanced attack from the start. Sophomore outside hitter Tia Scambray led the team early with five kills, one ace, and a .444 hitting percentage after set one. “From a serving and attacking standpoint we did a great job,” head coach Keegan Cook said. “We put a lot of pressure on the Beavers.” The service pressure from the UW continued into the second and third sets. Freshman Destiny Julye ended the night with a team-leading .667 hitting percentage, and added eight kills. Scambray ended with a team-leading 10 kills on the night, and sophomore outside hitters Courtney Schwan and Crissy Jones each added nine of their own. Schwan also contributed three of the UW’s total of six aces on the night. Organized blocking early on from the Huskies kept the top of the net well sealed against the Beavers, as the UW went on a seven-point run in the second set to lead 11-3. They only allowed seven more points from OSU in set two and closed with a second seven-point streak to take a 2-0 lead. “Second set, the block was outstanding. I thought our right side did a great job,” Cook said. “Destiny and Crissy and Tia in particular all had really strong nights.” The UW had an overall team hitting percentage of .396 to OSU’s .190 on the night. The Huskies kept OSU’s star player, sophomore Mary-Kate Marshall, to a .448 hitting percentage, but she added a game-high 15 kills. Senior middle blocker Lianna Sybeldon ended the night with seven blocks for the Huskies, officially putting her in the record book for the third-most blocks in school history. Second-place is held by assistant coach Leslie Gabriel, formerly Leslie Tuiasosopo. The UW remains on the road to face Oregon at 4 p.m. Friday. The Huskies will have to prepare for the quick pace of Oregon’s gameplay when they take on the Ducks in Eugene, Ore. “We’re gonna have to move quite a bit faster,” Cook said. “The Ducks run an extremely fast offense so we are going to need to match that with our blocks.” Reach Editor-in-Chief Kathryn Altena at sports@dailyuw.com.
