Huskies finish second at Spartan Invitational

The Washington women's golf team finished second yesterday at the Spartan Invitational in San Jose, Calif. The No. 4 Huskies shot 290 to finish at 18-over par for the two-day event. The UW finished two strokes off of No. 2 UCLA which used a 5-over par performance yesterday to win the competition. "We played pretty well, but [UCLA] just played a little bit better than we did," coach Mary Lou Mulflur said. Three Huskies finished the tournament in the top 10. Junior Paige Mackenzie led the way, shooting even par 72 in the final round to finish tied for fourth at 1-over par with 214 with UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas. "Paige played really well," Mulflur said. "She had a little bit of discomfort yesterday with her back, but she managed to come out strong; I was pleased that she was able to come out and play today." Freshman Kim Shin carded a 72 yesterday to finish tied for sixth at 216. Cracking the top 10 for the first time this season was sophomore Amber Prange, who shot even par 71 yesterday to end in a three-way tie for ninth at 218. "She played really consistently," Mulflur said of Prange. "She had it going for a while today; she was at 3-under through 11." Junior Sung Ea Lee rounded out the scoring for Washington, posting a 75 to place 17th at 222. Sofie Andersson of California won the event by five strokes with a 206. The Huskies return to action in the Duck Invitational in Eugene, Ore., starting March 21.
