Huskies hang on against Cal, upset Stanford for weekend sweep

The 19th-ranked Washington men's tennis team (14-3 overall, 2-0 Pac-10) is at the top of the conference, thanks to stellar play this weekend amounting in a sweep of the Bay Area schools. "Every match in the conference this year are all going to be even and very competitive matches," coach Matt Anger said. "We were fortunate [against Stanford] and we were fortunate [against Cal]." The UW completed the weekend sweep with a tight victory over California (6-8, 0-1) Saturday as seniors Christoph Palmanshofer and Alex Vlaski pulled out third-set tiebreakers to clinch the victory. With the Huskies trailing the Bears 3-2, Vlaski fought off five match points, and survived with a victory over Conor Niland 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (9). Niland is ranked No. 19 nationally. Moments later, Palmanshofer finished off his match against No. 59 Lennart Maack 6-7 (7), 6-4, 7-6 (2) to clinch a 4-3 Washington victory. "It was a tough day today," Palmanshofer said. "Every singles match was really close, and we worked really hard the last couple weeks and I think we deserve this close match to go our way." The other singles victory for the UW was Alex Slovic's sweep of Patrick Briaud 6-3, 6-2. "We have had a lot of close matches through the years, and we have had incredible wins and some heartbreaking losses," Anger said. "I don't know if we've had many like this where I didn't see how we were going to pull it out. We were up against it in so many ways and their guys were playing so hard and so well." Washington pulled out the upset of No. 10 Stanford (8-6, 0-1) Friday with a 5-2 win. The Huskies were good from start to finish, coming out to sweep the doubles point and jump to an early 1-0 lead. That included Daniel Chu's and Slovic's defeat of No. 3 pairing of Sam Warburg and KC Corkery 8-2. The Huskies return to action next weekend as they head to Los Angeles to take on UCLA and USC.
