The Washington women's volleyball squad extended its season-long winning streak to 19 matches and put an end to Arizona's perfect home record last night in Tucson.
The Huskies (19-0 overall, 10-0 Pac-10) battled with the Wildcats (15-4, 7-3) to a 3-2 victory that dropped Arizona's home record to 7-1 on the season.
The match was tight in all five games with the Huskies and Wildcats trading victories throughout the match. Game scores were 30-19, 29-31, 30-21, 32-34 and 18-16.
"[Arizona] played so well and yet we were able to maintain our composure and just did some real nice things when it was critical," coach Jim McLaughlin said. "We didn't play well the entire time, but we found a way to win and sometimes that's the sign of a very good team."
In the deciding fifth game, the score went back and forth as the biggest lead either team got was the two-point advantage that Washington used to claim victory in the game and match.
Offense was the name of the game for the UW as four of its players ended the night with double-digit kills. Brie Hagerty led the team with 20, while Christal Morrison, Sanja Tomasevic and Alesha Deesing had 18, 16 and 15 kills respectively on the night.
Courtney Thompson controlled the ball effectively on the night, posting 65 assists in the match. Thompson leads the Pac-10 in assists per game.
On the defensive front, Darla Myre and Candace Lee came up huge. Myre led the team in blocks with seven while Lee dug the ball 28 times. Morrison also came up big defensively; recording 15 digs of her own.
The Wildcats countered the Huskies with a defensive effort of their own.
Arizona had 17 blocks as a team in the five-game match, holding the UW to a .234 hitting percentage. Dominique Lamb led the match with ten blocks individually.
Kim Glass put down 32 kills to lead the Wildcats offensively on the night. Jennifer Abernathy was second on the team with 19.
"Arizona played well, they played tremendous defense and put a lot of pressure on us, and when the pressure was at the highest place we played our best," McLaughlin said. "I don't think we were great from start to finish, but we were great when we really had to be and we pulled off an exciting match."
The Huskies continue their weekend swing in the Grand Canyon State with a match against Arizona State tonight at 7 p.m. (MST).
The Sun Devils (7-13, 2-8) come limping into the match as losers of eight of their last nine matches. They opened up conference play on a bright note with at 3-0 sweep of Oregon, but didn't win until last night's victory over Washington State.
