Husky pair reaches NCAA round of 16

The Washington men's tennis team finally got a victory at the NCAA championships yesterday in College Station, Texas. In the first round of doubles play, 18th-ranked Huskies Daniel Chu and Alex Slovic defeated Luiz Carvalho and Jose-Carlos Pinto of Mississippi State in three sets. "It wasn't easy, and it was a heck of a match," coach Matt Anger said. "We squandered a couple of opportunities, but it was all close and good tennis." In the first set, Slovic and Chu climbed to an early 5-3 lead before the Bulldog pair rallied to win the next four games to take the set 7-5. The Huskies came back strong in the next two sets, taking them 6-3 and 6-4 to win the match. "I think their last two sets were pretty good," Anger said. "They didn't drop serve and we were pretty consistent the whole way through. They were a tough team." With the win, the UW will advance to the round of 16 that will be a match on the rubber against Stanford's Pac-10 doubles championship team of KC Corkery and Sam Warburg. In the previous two meetings by the four players this season, the Huskies took the regular season match 8-1 while Corkery and Warburg defeated Slovic and Chu 8-6 in the finals of the Pac-10 tournament. "It is a great opportunity and challenge at the same time," Anger said of his players' matchup against the second-seeded doubles pairing. "They have done very well this season, but I think we have our chances too." The NCAA championships continue today and on into the weekend with the singles and doubles champions being crowned on Sunday.
