Men's basketball: weekend preview

Friday: UW vs. Wright State Wright State isn't going to be a huge draw for most college basketball fans, but the Raiders did go 20-13 last season and return four starters from that team. They also won their only exhibition game pretty easily. Still, a mediocre team from the Horizon League will hardly be considered a threat in Seattle against the Huskies. Saturday: UW vs. Belmont Belmont and Wright State are similar, as the Bruins also finished 20-13 last year and were selected for the CollegeInsider.com tournament. They were picked to finish fifth in the Atlantic Sun Conference this year, partially due to the graduation of five seniors. Eleven of the 15 players on Belmont's roster are freshmen or sophomores. That could mean an early blowout against the more seasoned Huskies, which is what most will be expecting. Sunday: UW vs. Portland State It could be a rebuilding year for the Vikings as they settle in for year one of the Tyler Geving era, losing former head coach Ken Bone to WSU. They also lost one of the best players in the conference the past couple seasons, leading scorer Jeremiah Dominguez. But they do have former Husky Phil Nelson, who is capable of scoring 30 points on any given night. And remember, Portland State took a bus in the snow to Spokane last year, then pulled off a massive upset over Gonzaga. And they only lost by one point to the UW last season. This is by far the toughest test of the weekend for the Huskies. Reach Sports Editor Christian Caple at sports@dailyuw.com.
