Men’s tennis prepares for ITA Regional Championships

Joseph Oh

The Washington men’s tennis team is heading to the ITA Regional Championships in California over the weekend where several players will compete in a single draw for a spot at the top. The majority of the players attending already had their first competition of the fall earlier this month at the USCB Classic including junior Enzo Sommer who won the doubles title for the tournament with junior Kawika Lam.

Over the last two seasons Sommer and Lam have had a successful doubles record, leading the team in duo wins each year. After a summer of playing apart, their tournament win at the start of fall was a great boost of confidence for the two.

“The first tournament of the season is never too easy but I thought that every single day we were getting better down there,” Sommer said to gohuskies.com.

It was also the first tournament as Huskies for the UW’s freshmen, Jack Davis and Alexis Alvarez. Individually, Davis was able to win three of his four singles matches and Alvarez won one of his four singles. Together as a doubles pair, they won one of three matches.

“They were both getting a lot of matches,” head coach Matt Anger said to gohuskies.com. “It was a lot of learning for them but also for Chris and I as the coaches to be on the court with them for the first time.”

As the team heads to the ITA Regional Championships, it will be another chance for the players to bring their work from practice out into their matches in competition.

“You’ve got to keep making progress and improvement and still compete and be tough as nails out there,” Anger said. “That’s what I want out there is that combination.”
